Gratitude Is Contagious

We can give our children no greater gift than a positive, consistent attitude of gratitude. Attitudes are contagious! If we are discontented, our kids know it and begin to reflect it. If we are grateful, they pick up on that too. What attitudes are our kids catching from us? If we are making the effort to develop a habit of giving thanks, our kids will grow up to be thankful as well.

I’ve found that the dinner table is a great place to begin teaching children about thankfulness. As you offer thanks for the meal, go ahead and mention several other things for which you and you family can be thankful. Later, as you put your kids to bed at night, take another opportunity to thank God, spotlighting in prayer the good things He is doing in their lives and yours.

You might also want to start a “Grateful Poster” in your kids’ rooms to help them reflect on God’s loving-kindness toward them. Have your children help you decorate a poster board using stickers, pictures, and markers. Then work with your kids to come up with a small sentence each day that thanks God for His blessings, both great and small. Older kids can decorate a bulletin board and tack up notes of thanks to God. These visual reminders will help keep your children’s thoughts in a thankful direction and, hopefully, instill a habit of thankfulness in their lives.
